Notes |
- The will of "Deacon" George Clark—he so describes himself—is dated Apr. 15, 1678. A codicil was made Aug. 18, 1688. It is recorded on the records of the Superior Court, Vol. 4, at Hartford. This will was not admitted to probate as is shown by a hearing held before the County Court at New Haven on Aug. 7, 1690. The plea of Thomas Clark, the oldest son, was that the will was void in law by the death of the executrix before the death of the testator, and also that it was defective and imperfect in sundry respects. The court ruled that it could not approve of the will for record, yet it was not to be wholly rejected but was to be allowed as directive in part for administration.
Thomas Clark was born before his parents settled in Milford; circa 1638; died at Milford, Conn., Oct. 23, 1719, aged 81 ; married first , May 20, 1663, Hannah Gibbard, baptized at New Haven, Oct. 31, 1641, died at Milford, Nov. 4, 1703, daughter of William and Anna Gibbard; married second, Grace Prudden, born at Stratford, Conn., Feb. 19, 1651, died at Milford, Jan. 1723/4, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Judson, and widow of Samuel Prudden. For many years he was in the public service. He represented Milford as Deputy at the sessions of Oct. and Nov. 1683, May, July and Oct. 1684, May and Sept. 1689, Oct. 1690, May and July 1691, May, June and Oct. 1692, Feb., Mar., May, Sept. and Oct. 1693, May and Oct. 1694, May and Oct. 1695, May and Oct. 1696, May and Oct. 1697, May and Oct. 1698, May and Oct. 1701, May and Oct. 1702, May and Oct. 1703, and May and Oct. 1704 [Conn. Colony Rec. 3:121, 133, 139, 151, 155, 25o; 4:2, 33, 43, 53, 66, 75, 78, 87, 89, 91, 101, 104, 12o, 130, 138, 148, 158, 174, 197, 221, 245, 265, 342, 359, 371, 395, 407, 435, 461]. From 1691 to 1698 he was Commissioner for Milford, an office which was similar to Justice, and after the counties were organized in 1698, he was appointed Justice of the Peace for New Haven County and apparently held that office until the expiration of his last term in 1710 [Ibid., 4:43, 66, 92, 121, 139, 159, 201, 26o, 347, 414, 467, 500, 532; 5:2o, 62, 94].
He was called eldest son in the will of his father, "Deacon" George Clark. In the record of his first marriage, he was described as son of George Clark "Seniour." On Mar. 18, 1681/2, "George Clarke of Milford Sent" made a deed of gift "in consideration of my fatherly love & affection unto my son Thomas Clarke of ye same Towne." Another deed was given, Sept. 4, 1686, by "George Clark of Milford Sent" for "love & Respect unto my Son Thomas Clarke of Milford." [M. L. R. 3:12; 1 and 2, reversed, p. 44.] [4, 5]
