Notes |
- He came from Newport, co. Buckingham, Eng. . Statements that he was a member of the Wodhull family of Thenford, co. Northampton are absurdly irrelevant. Of Concord by 1639; rem. to Southampton, L.I. 1642; and later to Fairfield, where a grant of land was recorded 8 Apr 1660. Will 6 Jun 1676; son William; grandchild Samuel Morehouse, son of daughter Rebecca, and his brothers Thomas and John Morehouse; grandchild John Odell, son of John; to Goody Knap, four yards of new red cloth; daughter-in-law Mary Odell; son John Odell and daughter Rebecca Morehouse; son-in-law Samuel Morehouse and son John Edel, Executors. Inventory 12 Jun 1676.
William Odell was closely related in all likelihood, to Mary Odell who married at Salford, co. Bedford, England, 12 Jul 1630, Benjamin Turney. The Turneys were with William Odell in Concord and Fairfield. Mary had no brother William, but she had three uncles, Richard, Thomas and William, all known to have had children and suitable in age for the paternity of William. Newport Pagnell, co. Bucks, where William had a fracas in 1637 , is very close to Salford, and only about five miles from Cranfield, co. Bedford, home town of the Wheelers of Concord and Fairfield, where Odells were numerous. Until the parentage of William is established by record evidence, various claims of his exalted descent which have been put forward rest on no firmer foundation than the unsupported asseveration of their proponents.
NEWPORT EDWARD HARTLEY for quarrelling by words with WILLIAM ODELL in the churchyard and stabbinge the seyd William through the arme. He was questioned for this at the Assizes and punished. In the margin appear the words 17 October, 1639. Absunt Nova Anglia. Beneath are the words WILLIAM ODELL la supra.
William was too old to be the son of Richard Odell in his 1636 will . There is still the best of reasons for believing that he was the man or youth who was involved in the quarrel in the churchyard of that parish. His paternity is again thrown open to research. With the knowledge that he was not son of Richard of Newport, we may speculate on the probability that he was a first cousin of Mary Turney, who also came with the Concord settlers and removed to Fairfield. She had three uncles, Richard, Thomas and William, all of whom left unknown issue, and any one of whom was suitable in age to be the father of the colonist. [1, 5, 6, 7]
