Notes |
- Peggy Jean Owdom died peacefully surrounded by her family after a brief illness. She was born in Visalia on North Encina Street. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Rex Owdom; her brother, John McFadzean of Bakersfield; and her parents, Donald and Alice McFadzean of Visalia. Peggy has deep roots in Visalia and was proud of her family's pioneering spirit. Her great-grandmother, Elmira Cecil Parker Owen, a widow with three sons, migrated to California by wagon train and settled in Visalia in 1857. Her great-grandfather, W. C. Owen, served as Tulare County Sheriff in the early 1860s. Her grandfather, Daniel McFadzean, was Tulare County District Attorney in the early 1900s and a longtime attorney in Visalia. She had fond memories as a little girl of walks, shopping and ice cream treats with her grandmother, Nell McFadzean, in early Visalia. Peggy graduated from Exeter High School in 1936 and attended Occidental College. Later, she worked for many years as a courtroom clerk for the Tulare County Superior Court. On retirement, Peggy and Rex built a home near friends at Sequoia Crest and spent many wonderful years in the higher elevations and snow before moving back to Visalia in the 1990s. Peggy was a longtime member and Past Matron of the Martha Washington Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of Daughters of the Nile, and Past President of the Tulare-Kings County Nile Club. Peggy volunteered at Kaweah Delta Hospital and served as an election precinct worker, among other charitable works. Peggy lived independently until the end, driving her car around town to her many appointments, engagements and luncheons, and maintained her own home with a little help from her friends. The family thanks Peggy's many friends for their concern and kind companionship for Peggy and the entire staff at Kaweah Delta Hospital for their sensitive and professional care. Peggy is survived by daughters{, Patricia Cornelius of Pasadena, and Julie Thomas of Maine}; a son{, Bruce Owdom of Fresno}, grandchildren{, Charley Cornelius of Claremont, Chad Cornelius of Pasadena, Jennifer Larlee of Maine, Nathaniel Owdom of San Francisco, and Matthew Owdom of Visalia}; nine great-grandchildren and her favorite dog Amy. A Graveside Service will be held at Visalia District Cemetery on Friday, January 2, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of donor's choice.
