Born in Roxbury and learned his trade of engraver in Lowell. He came to No. Adams in 1859 and for a number of years was foreman of the engraving room of what was then called the upper print works owned by the Arnolds. Our Great Grandfather was not a common laborer. He was a tradesman. Somewhere in my memory, I believe he was an engraver and boss of the engraving department at the print works. One reason I'm sure they were not just ordinary laborers was the house. I went there several times when a child with my father when Uncle Will and Aunt Louise were living there. We went in the side door and entered the dining room. On the west wall was a huge buffet with a large mirror. The table and chairs were of polished dark wood. In the sitting room, between two windows on the east side was a long looking glass that reached from the ceiling almost to the floor sitting on a marble shelf. There was a black horse hair sofa that I hated to sit on because it was slippery and picked. I had a hard time sitting still. The chairs were large with dark wooden frames. The seat and back were covered with dark brown leather.

    Appointment of Thomas Harvey

Undertaking signed by Thomas Harvey 27 Sept 1811
"I voluntarily accept the office of Schoolmaster … I also agree to teach and instruct such poor children … as cannot attend to be instructed during the usual school hours , in the Evenings between the hours of six and eight o\clock …"

" in the case of great misconduct by the Master he may be displaced by the Trustees or at least that they may withhold any further payments to him out of the rent of the Charity estate and if they should do so and the master should feel himself undeservedly punished his only remedy would be by Application to the Court of Chancery …

1834 Power of Trustees to Remove Schoolmaster
There is a discussion of how the schoolhouse came to be in the possession of the Trust:

" … the .. [present] schoolhouse was allotted and awarded to the trustees in .. 1800 … by Spetisbury Enclosure Act …in exchange for another house … the present trustees have no means of ascertaining how the old school house became originally vested in their predecessors …they presume it must have been purchased about the time the charity was established"

" For several years past Thomas Harvey has co-habited with a married woman in Spettisbury living apart from her husband of the name of Plowman and a considerable time since he took a house for her in the parish at the month of October last notwithstanding it was a matter of notoriety that her husband was living Harvey went off with and got married to her in the neighbourhood of London and then returned with her to Spettisbury and continued to cohabit with her as his wife until very recently when she absconded in consequence of her first husband W Plowman coming to Spettisbury and taking a proportion of her goods and obtaining a Magistrate's Warrant for her apprehension for Bigamy by intermarrying with Harvey. The Trustees consider this immoral conduct on the part of Harvey renders him an unfit person to be continued in this office of Schoolmaster and that it is a duty incumbent on them to remove him but having doubts as to their power they wish to obtain your opinion on the subject. It should be observed also that for many years past there have been occasional complaints made by the parents of children … of Harvey; neglecting the school and about 2 years since he many days together left the management of it to a daughter whilst he employed himself with the farmers in the shearing of sheep. He has also for some time thought it proper to carry on the business of Baker at the Schoolhouse.
Your opinion is therefore requested whether … the trustees would be authorized in removing Harvey from his office … and what legal measures can be pursued … for the purpose of turning him out of his office and out of the school house"

"There could be no doubt … that the Trustees would be well justified in removing Mr Harvey from the school ……….. but if the offence has been known for some time to the Trustees they will be expected to explain why he was considered fit to continue in the office …It does not appear what steps the Trustees took when they were first apprised of Harvey's misconduct. …[there is a note that they had no meetings during this time]

If Harvey should be able to explain … the Accusation, .. I do not think the carrying on of the business of Baker would be sufficient to sustain such a punishment ..having left the management of the school to his daughter … would have little effect at this distance in time"
