- Robert W. Betz, 83, of Rushford, died Friday at his home. He was born Aug. 1, 1917 in Rushford, to George and Jessie Betz. He grew up in Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School. He served in the Army Air Corps in Africa during World War II. He was employed at the former Rush Products/Lake Center Industries until his retirement in 1987. He married Verna James in Rushford on April 17, 1939. He was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council both as a member and an officer. He was an active member of the Ferndale County Club and served several years on the board of directors. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Rushford. He was a former member of the Rushford Lions Club, where he also served as president. His hobbies were golfing, yard work, growing roses, spending time with his family and friends, spending winters in Monterey, Calif., and reading and working word puzzles. He also enjoyed making doughnuts and little candy favors for his grandchildren. Since WWII he has spent every Memorial Day placing flags on the veterans' graves. A quote that he believed in is "there is a God that helps you along life's way, if you only ask Him." He is survived by his wife, Verna; three daughters{, Roberta Johnson of Austin, Carol Tweten of Byron, and Sybil Williams of Monterey, Calif}; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister. Funeral services were Jan. 2 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiated. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.

Betz resigned from First National Bank of Rushford last week after 17 years of employment when national examiners discovered a shortage of $1,250 in one of the bank's accounts and $2,300 in two guardianship accounts in the bank, said Elvin Humble, bank president.
