- Melvin C. Gunderson came to Burke County, North Dakota, in 1904, to his father's homestead 10 miles south of Columbus. Melvin attended school in Leaf Mountain Township. In January of 1931, Melvin and Borghild Kleppen were married. They lived on a farm south Columbus, and in 1956, they left the farm and moved to Powers Lake. Melvin was employed on the railroad and later the Lakeland Cheese factory. He was also employed at the McGregor gas plant, P. V. Elevator in Powers Lake, and also was janitor at the hospital. [2]
