- Former Shoshoni and Gas Hills resident Lyle R. Hoffman died on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in Elko, Nevada. He was 94.
Lyle Riehm Hoffman was born in Rockford, Iowa, on Sept. 1, 1915, the son of Walter S. and Iola Hoffman.
He earned an associate of science degree from Parks Business School in Denver, Colo., and attended aerial mapping, surveying, and photography school in Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Hoffman was a veteran of World War II, serving as a B-17 pilot.
He married Margaret A. Smith on Jan 1, 1954, in Butte, Mont.
He worked in the mining industry as a maintenance planner, heavy duty diesel mechanic, and foreman. Mr. Hoffman was also a farmer, auto mechanic, administrative statistician, crop duster, and performed aerial surveys.
He had lived in Elko, Nevada, for the past 12 years. Prior to 1998, he lived in Shoshoni for 35 years, 1963-1993, the Gas Hills for five years, 1958-1963, Sheridan, Mont., Townsend, Mont., Chicago, Ill., Rockford, Iowa, and Denver, Colo.
His family said Mr. Hoffman enjoyed riding motorcycles, driving fast cars, shooting and hand loading, was interested in aviation, airplanes, and jets.
He was a member of the Catholic faith and of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Survivors include his son{, John P. Hoffman of Elko, Nev.}; daughters{, Carla A. Holland and Karen Cooper both of Sheridan, Mont.}; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother, a brother, a sister, and a son. [2]
