- Farmed approximately 120 acres in Russell valley near Portland WI. Was member of Lutheran Church in Portland where all of his children were baptized and confirmed. He and Ida, his and Ida's parents and many of his children are buried in the cemetery next to that church. Ida's brother is also there. 1870 census lists a Nicckle J. age 9. This must be John Nicholas.The John M listed there must have been the older brother Mons. Was Nickkle a nickname? In this case Mons would have been age 20 and Albert 18. News clipping for his 50th wedding aniversary in 1939 indicates that John moved with his parents from Vernon County WI where he was born to Dane County WI where they lived for a short time. In 1868, at age 6 or 7, he moved [presumably with his parents ] to a farm in Monroe County near Portland. He bought a farm in Russel valley near Portland where he had lived for 71 years by 1939. Thus, at his death in Feb 1944, he must have lived on this farm for 75 or 76 years. His father Johannes died of a stroke while visiting his son John in 1910.
