- ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Gordon Hammel will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at People of Hope Church in Rochester, with the Rev. Gary Dreier officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Hammel, 64, of Rochester, died Monday at Saint Marys Hospital.
Gordon Paul Hammel was born Oct. 23, 1940, in Rochester. He grew up in Eyota and was a graduate of the public schools there. He enlisted in the Air Force and served as a military policeman at an air base in Greenland from 1958 to 1962. He returned to Minnesota and worked out of Sleepy Eye, Minn., as a dairy farm equipment salesman. Later, he worked as a truck driver for Dahlen Transport in Eyota and retired in 1990 due to health concerns. He married{ Kathryn} Dornink on Nov. 13, 1982, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Eyota. He was a member of People of Hope Church and the Eyota American Legion and enjoyed fishing, playing cards and the casino.
Survivors include his wife; six daughters{, Susan Wondrasch, Cindy Hammel and Melissa Hoopman, all of Rochester, Karen Smith of West Concord, Joanne Burke of Stockton, Calif., and Michele Wanek of Claremont; four sons, Dave Hammel of Rochester, Dan Hammel of Eyota, Jim Hammel of Grand Meadow and Michael Beighley of Buffalo, Minn.}; 18 grandchildren; two brothers{, Richard of Dover and Howard of Owatonna}; and a sister{, Ardith Ihrke of Dover}. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Homes in Rochester, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church. [2]
