- Elaine L. Datta, age 93, of Winona, MN, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at Lake Winona Manor.
Elaine was born on May 9, 1923, to Ambrose and Alma Eggen. She was raised in Rushford, Minnesota. Her father passed away when she was 11, leaving her mother; 4 brothers, John, Doug, Al and Matt; and sister, Joan.
She met her husband, Robert, when he sold her a pair of shoes at Steinbauer's shoe store where he worked. They were married on August 18, 1941.
Elaine traveled with Bob when he joined the Airforce at the start of WWII to bases in Kansas and Texas. She returned to Winona while her husband served in the South Pacific. After the war, they moved to Chicago where her husband attended podiatry school and returned to Winona to set up his practice, and during later years of his practice, she worked as his assistant.
In their early years, Elaine and Bob enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing, camping with their children, and family get-togethers. She also loved gardening and cooking, and was an excellent seamstress. Her family was her greatest joy, and just prior to her death, Elaine and Bob celebrated 75 years of marriage.
Elaine is survived by her son{, Douglas Datta, Hopkins, MN}; daughter{, Sue Datta, Gig Harbor, WA}; grandsons{, Kevin Datta and Paul Datta}; sisters-in-law{, Pat Eggen, Betty Datta, Maxine Speltz, Janice Vose, Elsie Eggen and Joie Eggen}; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Michael; her brothers and sister; sister-in-law, Vi Turner; and brothers-in-law: Lyle Turner, Rory Vose, Jack Speltz, and Harold Datta.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Reverend Paul J. Breza will officiate. Elaine will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, September 8, 2016, from 9:30 AM until 10:15 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of choice.
Elaine's family would like to thank Dr. Edin for his help throughout the years, the many caregivers who came into Elaine's home, and the staff at Lake Winona Manor for their caring and kindness during her final days. [1]
