Charles and his wife ran a shop called "At Jeromes". In one of the city directories of the time there is an advertisement about his store as follows: "Xmas goods produced by American skill. By them in Stockbridge and protect your neighbors who try to protect you. Staples and luxuries for each member of the family. Would be pleased to show you. C. B. Jerome." In the 2004-5 edition of The Berkshires: America's Premier Cultural Resort, Official Visitors Guide and published by the Berkshire Visitors Bureau, page 170-1 there is an anecdotal record about life on Main Street in Stockbridge as follows: "In those days, personal service in a small town was reserved for "townies." When Mr. Jerome owned the dry goods sxtore, before Mr. Brahmen, an outlander came from the Red Lion to buy a spool of thread. Mr. Jerome held forth the thread and said, "Ten cents, please." "Oh my," the lady responded, "Ten cents? I can get that spool of thread in New York City for a nickel. Mr. Jerome's hand closed around the thread. "Then skiddy ye down to that city and get it."

Charles Burdette died on October 7, 1929 as a result of an accident. He was 60 years old and nine months and listed as a salesman and a resident of Gardiner, Mass. In the "Gardiner News" of October 7, 1929 there was a front page headline entitled: "Charles B. Jerome killed in automobile accident: West Broadway man found dead under machine on Templeton Road, Baldwinville- Repairing car when tragedy occurred.
Baldwinville, Oct 7---Charles B Jerome, 60, of 65 West Broadway, was found dead, his neck broken, under his automobile, near the Grary place on the Templeton road here this afternoon shortly after 1:30. The rim of the left rear wheel was resting on his neck and he had evidently been killed instantly. It is believed that Mr. Jerome had jacked up his care and gone underneath to make some repairs when the jack slipped, allowing the wheel to drop on his neck. The  body was discovered by Harry Stone of this town, driver of the shool bus, shortly after 1:30. Earlier in the day Mrs. Hattie E. Kendall, who lives nearby, had seen the machine and the man underneath it but she thought that he was just making repairs and made no attempt to investigate. Mr. Stone notified Dr. O. B. Roberts who in turn notified Medical Examiner Edward A. Sawyer. He had not reached the scene at 2:30. Mr. Jerome was a salesman. He is survivied by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Edna Douglas of Harvard, and a son, Fred, of Hadley. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Walker Funeral Home of Gardner.
The following day the same newspaper published a funeral obit as follows:
FUNERAL: Funeral in Stockbridge, Services for Charles Jerome to be Held Thursday. The funeral of Charles B. Jerome, 60, of 65 West Broadway, whose body was found pinned under the left rear wheel of his car on the Templeton Road in Baldwinville yesterday, will be held in the Episcopal church in Stockbridge Thurday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The body, which is now at the Walker Funeral Home, will be taken to Stockbridge tonight. According to Medical Examiner E. A. Sawyer, who viewed the body yesterday afternoon, Mr. Jerome was choked to death while effecting repairs on his car. When the body was first found it was thought that his neck had been broken by the wheel but the medical examiner's report state that asphyxiation was the cause. Mr. Jerome was well-known here. For a number of years he had acvted as local agent for the Watkinis Co., handling toilet articles, perfumes and similar products. He formerly lived with his family in the Maki blaock on Parker street, but several years ago purchased a home on West Broadway. Anyway, Charles and his wife, Harriet, daughter Beatrice and her daughter Shirley, son Fred and his wife Amy, and my mother, are all buried in the the same plot in the cemetary on Main St. in Stockbridge.

Charles B. Jerome, a well known former resident of this city, died suddenly this morning at his home in Gardner. Mr. Jerome while a resident of North Adams was employed at the store of C. H. Cutting and company. He left here about 20 years ago and went to Stockbridge where he was engaged in business for some years. From Stockbridge he went to Gardner to reside. He had a host of friends in this city who will learn with regret of his death. He is survived by three brothers, Ernest and Jeremiah Jerome of this city and Moses Jerome of Yonkers, N. Y. and by one sister, Mrs. Mary Crisfield of Yonkers, NY. Burial will take place in Stockbridge on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. [1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]
