    • Bill "Billy Joe" Southerland, 80, of Wesley Chapel Road, died Monday morning at Life Care Center of Greeneville. He was a widely-known tobacco farmer. Mr. Southerland attended Central Baptist Church as long as his health permitted He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division. Mr. Southerland was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post 1990; the Moose Lodge, the American Legion, and the Ottway Ruritan Club. He was a honorary member of the VFW Post 1990 Color Guard. His family noted "He always looked forward to selling barbecue tickets for the Ruritan club and was very proud to have received the Tom Downing award this past year. "He loved his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need." He was a son of the late James Grady and Mabel Ellen Broyles Southerland and the widower of Melvia Malone Southerland. Survivors include two sisters{: Virgie Gray and Lura Babb}; three brothers and sisters-in-law{: Jay and Helen Southerland, Bud and Lennis Southerland, and Don and Geraldine Southerland}; several special nieces and nephews{: Linda Harmon, Sammy and Sandy Malone, Jimmy and Linda Southerland, Jean McLain, Gale Brobeck, Jack and Ann Southerland, Dennis and Diane Southerland, R.T. and Barbara Southerland, Rae and Janice Southerland, Conley and Marsha Riddle, Phil and Linda Babb, Frank Southerland, Richard and Kay Lengell, and Rick Southerland}; several special great-nieces, great- nephews, and cousins, including two special great-nephews{: Ryan McLain and Mark Malone}; and his special friends: Jack Jones, Wayne and Norma Chapman, Jerry and Phyllis Jones, Betty Cogburn, Ruby Shelton, Jim and Barbara Jones, Joan Fanning Cogburn, Lonnie and Linda Key, Johnny Powers, Earl Mysinger, Tommy Armitage, Billy and Janice Barham, and Kyle and Norma Foshee. The family will receive friends from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at Kiser Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Rex Brown, the Rev. Todd Abbey, and the Rev. R.T. Southerland will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cross Anchor Cemetery. A military graveside service will be conducted by VFW Post 1990, American Legion Post 64, and the Tennessee National Guard. Nephews and great-nephews will be pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Montgomery, Dr. Dharmen Patel, the short-stay staff of Laughlin Memorial Hospital, the members of VFW Post 1990, Moose Lodge and Ottway Ruritan Club; and his "Breakfast Buddies" and the staff at Old Stage Restaurant.
