    • Melvin Norby, of Montevideo, died on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 98. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Rev. Tim Wheatley officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Anderson Funeral Home of Montevideo is in charge of funeral arrangements. Melvin Norby was born on April 17, 1913 in Big Bend Township of Chippewa Co, MN to the Hans and Caroline Norby. He was baptized in June of 1913 and confirmed on October 16, 1927, both at the Big Bend Lutheran Church He attended rural schools and served for a short time in the U.S. Army. On November 17, 1942, he was united in marriage to Viola Evenson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Benson. They lived in Montevideo, where he did construction work. Melvin retired when he was 65, but kept busy doing painting, shingling, mowing and other odd jobs well into his 80's. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo and was also a member of the American Legion for many years. He enjoyed camping and Viola's cooking. They never missed a family gathering, whether it was weddings, family reunions, birthday parties or graduations. You could always count on their attendance and always knew they would be there in plenty of time. Melvin enjoyed playing cards with his Brookside Manor buddies and shooting the breeze. He was very interested in current events and politics and whenever you visited he could tell you what was going on all over the country. He loved to talk about farm machinery and raising crops. This Spring he was very concerned about the tough time farmers had in getting their crops in. Melvin had been a resident of Brookside Manor since February of 2007 and had moved to the Luther Haven Nursing Home in May of 2011 He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Viola, on December 4, 2006; brothers: Herbert, Alvin and Orton Norby; sisters: Ida Molden, Cora Evenson, Agnes Halstad and Pearle Olson, as well as by numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
