Gilbert was 6 years old when his parents came to the farm 8

Fran). They homesteaded the 160 acres and built a sod house up on the
corner by the gravel road. They later built a brick house. Gilbert
was baptized Gulmon Andreas Melby. Gilbert's father, Erick Melby,
died when Gilbert was 2-1/2 years old and when his mother, Alice,

Alternate birth date (baptism date?): 27 Jul 1875

Gilbert Andrew Groven (Gilbert Andreas Andersen) (Golmon Andreas Melby)

Much confusion exists around Gilbert's name as he was the first offspring of Erik E. Andersen and Alice Gulmon in America and the Norwegian families were trying to adopt to American naming practices. The above names represent different names used by Gilbert as he completed the transition to American naming.

Gilbert was born and baptized as Golmon Andreas Melby, later adopted the name Gilbert Andreas Andersen and last, when his father died and his mother remarried, he adopted his stepfather's name Groven to become Gilbert Andrew Groven. "Andrew" is the English equivalent of Norwegian "Andreas".

I surmise that he was named first after his maternal grandfather Gudmund Egilsen Manheim and the baptism incorrectly reflected Golmon. Gudmund or Gulbrand meaning Gilbert. His middle name Andreas or Anders was that of his paternal grandfather which is equivalent to Andrew, thus giving him the name Gilbert Andrew and his surname Andersen was that of his father which his father had taken as his name in America

Gilbert was born in Harmony, Minnesota where his grandfather Gudmund Egilsen had settled with his family after immigrating to America. His parents were married in the Greenfield Lutheran Church at Harmony April 3, 1873 and he was born July 19, 1875. The 1875 census listed him as Golmon living with his parents at Fountain, Minnesota. Both Fountain and Harmony are in Fillmore County. He is again listed , but as Andrew Andersen, on the 1880 Federal census living with his mother,a widow, in Harmony, Minnesota. At that time they lived with his Uncle Even Gulmon. A younger brother Thomas (born in 1876) is also listed on this census.

It is not clear when his father died, or when they relocated towestern Minnesota. Evan Groven and Alice Groven married in Yellow Medicine County 21 July, 1881. His grandfather, Gulmund, died August 13, 1880. His stepfather, Even Groven, received a land patent in Fortier Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota in 1888.

Gilbert and his brother, Thomas Samuel Groven (who was born Torbjorn Osinus Andersen), were raised in Fortier Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. His mother and stepfather had three additional children. They were Aaste Hellene Groven, Christian E. Groven, and May Regina Groven. Aaste and Christian died as children and May grew up to marry Robert Wesley Patterson.

After the death of his stepfather, Gilbert's mother left the farm and moved to Canada to be near her daughter May. Gilbert then assumed the operation of the farm. Gilbert married Caroline Mathilda Olson in July1899. Together they had the following children: Agnes, Gida, Melvin,Albin, Eldrick, Clarence, George, Hilma, Helen, Frances.
