    Notes
    • Deputy (Stamford) to Conn. Leg. 1670-1691, Capt., Stamford Trainband, May 1698. Commissioner for Stamford and Greenwich, 1682-87, 1689, for Stamford, 1690-97; Justice, 1698.
He was consistently called Lt. in colonial records from 1674 until his promotion to Capt., but appointment not found. Perhaps the appointment of Francis as Lt. in 1666 is an error for Jonathan, since Francis was already Lt. by commission from New Haven Colony.
Will 24 Nov 1698; eldest son Jonathan; daughter Hannah Betts; sons Abraham, John; daughters Mercy, Susannah, Mary; wife Susannah. Inventory of Capt. Jonathan, 11 Mar 1698/9. He owned a tanyard.

Jonathan Bell, only son of Francis and Rebecca Bell, was one of the leading men of Stamford, being a selectman, representative, lieutenant and captain. He died March 11, 1699. He married, first, August 22, 1662, Mercy Crane, daughter of Jasper and Alice Crane of New Haven. She was born in February, 1645 and died October 26, 1671. Their children, all born in Stamford, were: Jonathan, Hannah and Rebecca. Jonathan Bell married, second, October 31, 1672, Susanna Pierson, daughter of the Reverend Abraham and Abigail (Wheelright) Pierson of Branford, Conn. Their children, all born in Stamford, were: Abigail, Abraham, Mercy, John, a daughter, James, Susanna and Mary.

The first white child born in Stamford

Jonathan Bell, son of Francis and Rebecca, was born at Stamford, September, 1641. Not only was he a worthy successor of his distinguished sire, but was fortunate enough to have been the first white child born in the town. For fourteen years he was Selectman of the town, and in 1670 was elected Representative to the General Court, in which legislative body he represented Stamford, with few interruptions, during a period of twenty-six years. In 1672 he was appointed Lieutenant of the Stamford Military Company, and in 1698 commissioned Captain by the General Court, directing him to take charge of the "ammonision of the town," and ordering that he should "find a suitable place for it in the Meeting House." Captain Jonathan Bell was prominent in religious as well as civil and military affairs, as it appears from the church records that he was chosen "to treat with the Rev. John Davenport for his settlement in the town as minister of the Gospel, to take charge of the Stamford Church." Captain Jonathan died March 11, 1699. His Will, recorded at Fairfield, shows the value of his estate as £456. [1, 2, 3, 7]
