[1, 2, 3] Notes - James Anderson was born in 1784 in Botetourt county, Va. Nancy Fletcher was born in 1786, in Rockbridge county, Va. They were married in Virginia in 1802 and had two children in Virginia. They moved in 1808 to Kentucky, where they had three children, and in 1813 moved to Indiana, where one child was born. They moved to Sangamon county, Ill., in 1820, and settled in what is now Ball township.
James Anderson, the fourth son of Robert and Margaret (Neely) Anderson of Botetourt County, Virginia, was born in Botetourt in 1784. In 1802, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, James married Agnes Nancy Fletcher, daughter of Job Fletcher, Sr.
According to Rockbridge County, VA, Marriages (1778-1850), Book #1, Page 92; James and Agnes were married, on 8 July 1802, by John Montgomery. John is thought to have been the minister for the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, located north of Goshen, in northwest Rockbridge County, Virginia.
On 21 September 1779, Agnes' father, Job Fletcher, Sr., bought 266 acres of land on the River of "Calf pasture," near Goshen.
Excerpts from the History of Sangamon County, Illinois, written in 1876 by John Carroll Power: "James Anderson came to the county in 1820. He was born in Virginia, moved from there to Kentucky, thence to Indiana, and then to Illinois. He settled on section 33, but afterwards moved to the North Fork of the Sangamon River, where he died in 1828." That information was furnished by James Anderson's oldest daughter, Margaret L. (Anderson) Drennan. She was seventy one years old and the only living child of James and Agnes (Fletcher) Anderson when the county history was compiled.
Many Virginians who migrated to Illinois first moved to WV or KY. The receipt of Military Certificates for service was sometimes the catalyst for family migration.
[James Anderson and Agnes Nancy Fletcher were married by Rev. John Montgomery.
