Notes |
- Ezra Rockwell, born (supposed) at Lenox, Mass., Feb. 10, 1772, and is said to have moved to Solon, now Cortland County, NY, about 1793, and settled on a tract of land ceded by the commissioners of the State of New York to Daniel Orr, and probably purchased by Ezra Rockwell, containing six hundred acres, a copy of the original document being at this writing in the hands of the writer, together with a copy of an original commission to Ezra Rockwell as ensign of a company in the regiment of the militia of Onondaga County, NY, dated April 8, 1806, and signed by the governor, Morgan Lewis. Also a copy of the marriage certificate, which is dated at Berkshire, Mass., May 30, 1792, certifying that on that day Ezra Rockwell and Priscilla Bateman were lawfully married, signed John Baron, Justice of the Peace.
Ezra Rockwell's biographer says of him that he was a man of untarnished character, a devout Christian, and a kind and benevolent man, a great reader, and he and his family were liberal contributors towards the founding of the Presbyterian church at Solon, which was built on a plot of ground donated by him for that purpose. Said edifice is still standing (at this writing, 1891) and in a fine state of preservation after a lapse of nearly one hundred years. A schoolhouse and parsonage were also built on land given by him. He says at that early date they were frequently annoyed by bears and deer, and occasionally a company of Indians would come to their house and cause some alarm, but never committed any very serious depredation. At that period he was obliged to take the grain on horseback a distance of forty miles to a mill, employing two to three days for the trip. About 1839 they (Ezra and his wife) were becoming advanced in life, and sold the farm at Solon to their son Chauncey Rockwell, who was to give them a home with him as long as they lived. She died at Solon, NY, Nov. 15, 1846, and he moved with his son to Ulster, PA, where he died April 17, 1859. [2]
