- Homesteaded on Heimistogu farm, located between Kviteseid and Seljord in the Brokefjell Mountain area upper Telemark, 42 kilometers from Skien. Departed from Kragero, Norway on July 12, 1851 on the ship "Columbus" with all children except Ole, who had already gone in 1848. The trip to New York lasted seven weeks. They traveled up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal, settling in Koshkonong, Wisconsin, where they stayed two months on the parish farm of Pastor A. C. Preus. They traveled on to the Skonponong Settlement in Walworth County, WI where their son Ole had settled but there was no land. In 1853, they set out north and west through Prairie Du Chein, WI where they ferried across the Mississippi River into Iowa, traveling on to the Washington Prairie Settlement located just northeast of Calmer, IA. In the fall of 1853, Ole Overland and Halvor Erickson traveled to Minnesota and found land in Highland Prairie, returning for the winter. In March of 1854, the men in the company journeyed to Highland Prairie to stake claims, and erected the first dwelling on the prairie, the home of Johanees and Tone Overland. They remained there for the rest of their lives.
