    Notes
    • Belle filed for divorce April 6, 1895 and was granted a divorce on October 14 of the same year. She and their only surviving child went to live at her parents' home in Syracuse. Van Horn was bitter toward Jesse Anderson whom he blamed for the divorce and because he was not allowed to see his child. On May 21, 1896 the court finally allowed him to see his son accompanied by an officer, which he did several times. In 1897, he sued Jesse Anderson for $10,000 damages for defamation of character. The jury awarded him $1 and he had to pay the court costs. Van Horn became subject to temporary periods of insanity. About 6:30 p.m. on November 6, 1897 he went to the Abbott home in Unadilla, where he knew Belle was visiting, and demanded to see his son. He had a rifle. Belle screamed and ran into another room and locked the door. He forced his way into the house, shot their three-year old son in the head, then ran through the housed searching for Belle. Mrs. Abbott ran into the street shouting for help which came quickly, but not soon enough from preventing Van Horn form committing suicide. Their son lingered several days before dying. Belle went insane and was committed to the State Hospital in Lincoln, NE. When she contracted "consumption," her folks took her home and cared for her nine months until her death March 13, 1906 at age thirty-three.

Died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Anderson, Miss Belle Anderson, aged 33 years, 4 months and 4 days of consumption. Miss Anderson Was born in Fayette, Fayette county, Wisconsin on November 9, 1872 and came to Nebraska with her parents when a child, settling on a farm southwest of Syracuse. She was converted when ten years of age under the ministry of Lucy Myers Ryder and Rev. George Alexander, uniting with the Methodist Episcopal church and has lived a consistent christian life ever since. She had been in poor health for the past nine months and during all that time has never surrendered or complained. Her christian courage and fortitude has been the wonder of her friends for her suffering was intense for the greater part of the time.
Miss Anderson leaves a father, mother, five sisters, and three brothers to morn the irreparible loss of a loving sister and daughter. The funeral was held at the M. E. church on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. L. Morrison assisted by Rev. Ruck, of Unadilla, conducting the services. A selected quartette furnished the music, singing Jesus Lover of My Soul, One Sweetly Solemn Thought, and Asleep in Jesus.
The church was beautifully decorated by members of the Epworth League with palms, potted plants and the flowers sent by friends were beautiful and profuse.
Miss Anderson was a lovely Christian character, her life was a benediction to all who came in contact with her.
The interment was made at Park Hill cemetery.
