- Dr. Ross C. King, 79, a practicing physician in Clinton for 42 years until his retirement in 1975, died at 5 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after a heart attack. His body has been donated to the University of Iowa and there will be no funeral or visitation. Dr. King was widely known for his work in the field of alcohol abuse. In 1980, he was the first recipient of the Kirk Strong award. This award was created by the Governor's Commission of the Iowa Department of Substance Abuse to honor individuals' dedication and concern for substance abusers in the state. For more than 30 years, he was active in the work of the Clinton Alcoholic Anonymous chapter. The city's first half-way house for alcoholics was named in his honor in 1973. Dr. King was a charter member and first president of the Clinton County Commission on Alcoholism and was a charter member of the Iowa State Commission on Alcoholism and the Iowa State Medical Society Committee on Alcoholism. Professionally, he held the degree of Diplomate in the International College of Surgeons, the degree of Fellow in American College of Chest Physicians and the degree of Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was born Dec. 19, 1903, in Nebraska City, Neb., to Robert and Clara King. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine at Omaha, was associated with Cook County Hospital for 10 years and took special training in surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. During World War II, he served four years in the Army Medical Corps with the rank of captain. He had served as president of the Mercy Hospital staff and the Lyons club. He was a member of the Clinton County Medical Society, Iowa State Medical Society and American Medical Association. He founded the medical clinic at the corner of Pershing Boulevard and Main Avenue.{ Dr. King and Elynor Stagg of Thomson were married Oct. 5, 1951, in Davenport. Surviving are his wife; a son, Ross Jr., and three daughters, Dixie, Jane and Mary.}
