Anthony Harker was born in Moestroff, Luxembourg on April 14, 1869. He came to U.S. in 1886 and worked in John Shoemacher's butcher & grocery. His mother was Elizabeth Vernundi, his father Michael Harker. My mother has a note the town he came from was destroyed in World War I. I have a note saying his father's sister was Madame Canneghem, St.Martin, Lorey Meuse, France
(Note: Tony had a sister, Elisabeth, who married Jean Baptiste Van Vanneghem)
Note: During first world war:
Moestroff was not destroyed or badly damaged. The German troops crossed the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg to go to Belgium and the Luxemburger army was not able to oppose them; as a result, no battles were held in the area of Moestroff. On an other side, the Luxemburger people had not to endure reprisals of the German soldiers because they resisted. These are the reasons why Moestroff, and also the other localities of the Grand-Duchy were saved from destruction.Â
During the second world war:
During the Battle of the Bulge (Dec 1944 / beginning 1945), Moestroff and the localities in the neighborhood, situated not far from the German border, were in the way of the retreating German troops. In these localities, protected behind the Saure river, which was difficult for the US Army to cross in the winter, the German troops took position and organized a strong resistance against the US army, which was obliged to set these localities under heavy artillery and mortar fire, resulting in much damage.Â
Anton Harker and Susan Goschy married on 17 Apr 1894 in Ozaukee Co., Wisconsin as were Susan's older brother Dominic Goschy and his wife, Mary Momper.
It was a double-wedding ceremony.
