    Notes
    • Daniel was born in Ireland. He left his family and came to America because he was angry at his church. In 1832 he apparently was in New York, where he got married. He left for Wisconsin in 1845 with his family. His total family supposedly consisted of 12 children, one of whom was Anna McConnell, who married Jesse Anderson. The McConnell family, in Ireland, belonged to the aristocracy and it is said of Daniel that he never wore a colored shirt. He did the management on his farm but no hard labor. His family was Roman Catholic; one brother was a priest. He never got in touch with his family after coming to America. He died in 1878 from injuries he received in a runaway accident when he was in Gratiot about five miles form home. They took him home but he lived only two weeks.

Daniel McConnell. was a native of Ireland and was a distiller by trade, but followed the occupation of farming during the greater part of his life. When nineteen years of age he bade adieu to friends and native land and sailed for the new world, for he believed that better business opportunities might be secured in the United States. Daniel was also angry with the Catholic church for excommunicating his brother because he joined the Mason's. Daniel located first at Geneseo, New York, where for several years he worked at his trade. He then removed westward in 1846. becoming a resident of Wisconsin, and took up his abode in the town of Wiota. Lafavette county, where he purchased one hundred and twenty acres of land and engaged in farming. He then bent his energies to the development and improvement of the place, brought its fields under a high state of cultivation and continued to till the soil there for a long period. Daniel retained his residence upon that farm until his death, which occurred when he was seventy-seven years of age, while his wife passed away at the age of eighty-three years. He became a Universalist in religious faith, while his wife was an advocate of the Unitarian belief. She bore the maiden name of Betsey Bennett, and was a native of Connecticut. By her marriage she became the mother of his thirteen children.

Daniel McConnell's headstone says he died on 14 Jun 1873 aged 85 years. If this is correct, he was born about 1788.
Mary Ann McConnell Flanigan, daughter of Daniel, said there is a mistake of 10 years on Daniel's headstone. It tells his age as 85 years and it should be 75 years. If this is correct, he was born about 1798.
The McConnell Family History states that Daniel was born about 1808 and died on June 14, 1883

Daniel McConnell's granddaughter, Marie Anderson Coddington, told that Daniel left the Catholic Church because the parish priest refused to bury his brother because of some alleged misconduct. Marie said that Daniel customarily drove to town on Saturdays where he bought the family's groceries and any needed clothes, hardware, etc., then joined friends in the saloon. When he was ready to go home, his friends would help him into the wagon seat, put the lines in his hands, unhitch the team, back them away from the hitching post and start them down the road toward home. The team knew the way. The fatal day something frightened the horses, they ran away and crashed into a tree or something. Daniel was thrown from the wagon, maybe hit something. Anyway he died about 3 days later. [1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15]
