- Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cloudcroft Baptist Church for William W. "Andy" Anderson, 85, who died Sunday at Williams Beaumont Hospital in El Paso. Officiating will be the Rev. Calvin Gray, pastor of the church. Interment will follow in the James Canyon Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hamiltoo Chapel from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Pallbearers include H. W. "Shorty" Buie, Lt. Col (Ret.) Harold F. Nenninger, David Bays, John Tally, Dale Earthman and Terry Buie. Born Oct. 5, 1887 in Syracuse, Neb., Anderson had served as a civil engineer with the U. S. Corps of Engineers. He had been a resident of Cloudcroft since 1955. He is survived by two sons, Col. (Ret.) John J. Anderson of Los Angeles and Gene Wilson Anderson of Downers Grove, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Marie Coddington, of Lincoln, Neb.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
William Whitfield Anderson was born in Syracuse, NE the youngest of 11 children. He was quite a baseball pitcher and played AAA ball. He homesteaded in Kit Carson, CO, graduated in accounting, and was also an excellent carpenter. After marriage and two children, he moved to Casper, Wyoming, and ran a grocery store. From there to Winette, Montana to manage anther store; then to Littleton, Colorado where he developed a poultry ranch. Another spin at cattle ranching in Kit Carson, Colorado. A contractor in Walden, Colorado supplying cedar posts to the highway department. Later he went to Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska where he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers building Air Bases during WW II. He then went to work in Los Angeles as an accountant where he retired. He moved to Cloudcroft, NM in 1956 where he lived until he died in May 1973 at the age of 85. He is buried in Alamogordo, NM.
