    • Another old settler has gone. Wm. D. Purves passed away at his home in this city Tuesday morning March 30th. Mr. Purves' health had not been as good as usual for more than a year but up to about a week before his death he had been able to attend to his routine of duties. His son, George, who is a physician, came last Saturday and here met Dr. Rupert Parker of Chicago and a careful examination was made. it was found that little could be done to help the sufferer and he passed away a few days later. Mr. Purves was born at Waddington, St. Lawrence county, N.Y., June 14, 1831, a son of sturdy Scotch immigrants, passed his early life in his native state and came to Wisconsin in 1861. He came to this vicinity a few years after the Powell brothers and along about the same time as William Taylor, Henry McRorie, Charles Freemar, John Brathwart, James Dunn and many others from St. Lawrence county who formed a considerable part of the good, substantial early settlement of this community thirty years ago.Mr. Purves married Esther Kern May 12, 1868 and they moved to the large farm in the town of Troy soon thereafter, where they spent the active years of their lives and reared their family. In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Purves moved to the home in this city where Mr. Purves died. He leaves to mourn his widow and six children: John W. of Friendship, Wis., Mrs. Bertha Tucker of St. Louis Mo., Mrs Margaret Stone of Menomonie, Wis. Geo K. of Wichita, Kan., Charles L. of Kansas City, Mo. and Mae of Denver, Col. Funeral services were conducted at the family home Thursday afternoon, Rev. W.J. Gray officiating. A good man has gone from the community. Mr. Purves was an industrious man, loyal to all his friends under all conditions. He was always ready to aid in any project that helped the community and in his more active days took a great interest in all local enterprises. He was a great reader and well informed on a national issues and in every line an independent thinker. The best and deepest thinkers of the community were his nearest friends. He will be much missed by his family and friends.

He then went on a farm and worked about a year, at the end of this time he purchased a 200-acre farm in Troy Township, St. Croix County. He broke up every foot of this land and there he made his home, until about eight years ago, when he rented the farm and moved to River Falls, Wis., about 1899.
