    Notes 
    • American Civil War Database shows Edward L. Kern and his cousin Joseph D. Kern enlisting in the Union Army August 27, 1862. Their Company was the H Co. 89th Inf Reg. IL which was active in battles in Missouri, Tennessee, and Georgia. His residence was listed as Darienwin, Illinois at the time of enlistment. He is listed as deserting on June 5, 1863. His cousin Joseph lost an arm during the war and received a disability discharge April 20, 1865. Source: Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men, published 1900.

Aug. 30, 1868 - Oil City, Pa. according to letter, and birthplace of son Edward J. Kern. Alice Kern Harker reported that her father, George L. Kern, told her that he was shown a large city school built in the late 1860's or early 1870's by his father, Edward Kern. The school was still in use abt. 1940, when George Kern visited Pennsylvania.

      Edward Kern, a carpenter, died suddenly at his home, 544 Front street shortly before one o'clock this morning. His death was due to blood poisoning according to the statement of Doctor Pritchard, who attended him. The deceased was taken ill Friday morning and grew worse and worse until he passed away this morning. He was seventy-four years of age and had been a resident of Illinois for over forty years. Mr. Kern was well known about town and had been doing carpenter work ever since he came to this city. He leaves one son, George, who resides in this city to mourn his loss.
