George Lambert Kern, 69, of 216 Blackhawk street, died this morning at 5:45 at St. Joseph Mercy hospital from injuries incurred shortly befor 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon when he was struck by an automobile driven by Raoph Norman Schleifer, 21, of Kanesville. The accident happened in North Lake street at West Park avenue. A coroner's jury meeting at the Healy chapel today returned a verdict of accidental death resulting from injuries suffered in the accident but placed no blame on Schleifer, who at the tiime of the accident was accompanied by Miss Ann Arnold, 601 North Harrison avenue. Schleifer testified that he was driving north at a speed of less than 25 miles an hour and didn't see Kern, a retired C. B. & Q. switchman, until just a second before the car struck the deceased. Kern was walking east from the west side of Lake street on the south side of the intersection when struck. Patrolman Paul Rydquist, who answered the accident call with Officer Cecil Larson, testified that there were light skid marks on the pavement when he arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. Miss Arnold also testified that she had not seen Kern until just before he was struck by the car. Schleifer was represented at the inquest, conducted by Coroner L. Victor Peterson, by Atty. Edward Streit, while the Kern family was represented by Atty. Everett Jordan. Asst. State's Atty. John Peterson was also present and interrogated all witnesses. Mr. Kern, who retired three years ago after 25 years of service with the Burlington, was born at Pleasantville, Pa., Nov. 23, 1877. He is survived by two sons, Lambert G. and Earl J., both of Aurora; two daughters, Mrs. Alice K. Harker of Sugar Grove, and Mrs. Evelyn K. Harker, of Aurora; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. Funeral services will be held from the home, 216 Blackhawk street, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. William Richards will officiate. Interment will be in Jericho cemetery. Friends may call at the home tomorrow afternoon and evening.
