      Will of James, Sr., 2 Oct 1736, proved 6 Oct 1736; wife Rebecca; daughters Mary Osborn, Abigail Bishop, Sarah Burritt; Sarah, Abiah, and Ann, children of daughter Anna Hawley deceased; grandson James Bennett; sons Thomas, Jeremiah, Isaac; son Joseph deceased. Capt. James Bennett appealed, 12 Mar 1736/7. Distribution 7 Apr 1738; Sarah Bryant (?); heirs of Anna Hawley Abigail Bishop; Mary Osborn; Capt. Thomas Bennett; heirs of Joseph Bennett; Isaac Bennett; Jeremiah Bennett.
      Lt. James was an original member of Stratfield Church, 1695, and his wife Mary joined by letter from Stratford, 1695. James Sr. and Mary Bennett witnessed will of Mrs. Abigail Hubbell, 11 Feb 1705, and James Sr. (with Philip Lewis) witnessed the codicil 10 Dec 1717; all three witnesses made oath, 5 Feb 1717/8.
      After death of his son James, Lt. James in 1714 confirmed gift of lands to the widow and children of his son

      Lt. James Bennett was father of the Joseph named as cousin (nephew) in Joseph Joy's will, and Bennett's daughter Abigail married and named a son Joy Bishop. We can therefore place (Walter Joy's unnamed daughter) as wife of James Bennett.

      The minutes recorded for the special general court held at Hartford, February 21, 1693, state:
      "The Governor haveing presented to this Court a letter from some gent(lemen) of New York, dated Feb. 15th, 1692/3, informing that the French and Indians have invaded a part of their Maties dominions and are in posession of two of the neerest of the Maquas castles, and desireing us to send to their ayde forthwith two hundred men with armes ammunition and provission, the Court, haveing considered the premises, doe order that forthwith theire be one hundred and fifty men raysed with armes ammunition and provission, and that fifty of them be dragoones, and upon their march forthwith to Albany, and the Governor and Councill are hereby authorized to disspatch away the whole one hundred and fifty to Albany or elswhere according to their best discression for (their) Ma (ties) interest and service as may be most convenient and advantagious in their judgements to repell, kill, and destroy the enemy, as they may, as allso to give such commissions, orders, and instructions, for the expedition or return, as they shall have intelligence of the enemies remayning or being departed out of their Ma(ties) dominions.
      New Havens proportion for this expedition is thirty seven, Fayrefeild County is thirty five, New London Countyes proportion is twenty eight.
      John Miles is appoynted Capt(ain) for the sayd company, James Benit is appoynted Liutenant for the sayd company, and Manassah Minor Ensigne.
      This Court for the more speedy expedition did order that the troope, to the number of fity of them besides officers, and are to be upon their march forthwith, and to meet at Hartford compleat in their armes tomorrow, furnished for a march, and to receive their orders of the Governor and Councill, and the sayd Capt. of the s(ayd) troop is to summon the troop to meet as afoars(aid) by ten of the clock in the morning."

      Lieut. James Bennett, son of James and Hannah (Wheeler) Bennett, born at Fairfield, about 1645; died there in October, 1736; married (first), about 1667, _____ Joy, daughter of Walter Joy. This is proved by the will of her brother, Joseph Joy, which named his cousin (nephew) Joseph Bennett; and her daughter Abigail (Bennett) Bishop, named a son Joy Bishop. He married (second), about 1683, Mary, widow of Ephraim Booth and daughter of Jeremiah Osborn; she was born at New Haven, March 29, 1653, and died at Stratfield, November 28, 1726, in her 73rd year. (Gravestone.) He married (third) Rebecca _____, who died in 1741 (administration granted, December 5, 1741).
      He served as Deputy for Fairfield to the Connecticut General court in 1689, 1695, 1697, 1699, 1701, 1702, 1706, 1708, 1709, and 1710. He was appointed Lieutenant for the Albany Expedition, February, 1692-3, and Lieutenant of the Stratford trainband, May, 1704. His will, dated October 2, 1736, proved October 6, 1736, named his wife, Rebecca; daughters, Mary Osborn, Abigail Bishop, and Sarah Burritt; Sarah, Abiah, and Ann, children of daughter, Anna Hawley, deceased; grandson, James Bennett; sons, Thomas, Jeremiah, and Isaac; deceased son, Joseph.
