    Notes
    • John, son of Richard & Ann Lidford, baptized June 14th, 1807

John Lidford of the parish of Charlton Marshall and Harriet Sophia Harvey of this parish (Spetisbury) were married in this Church by Banns this twentieth day of March in the Year One Thousand eight hundred and thirty four, By me John Cooke, Curate. This marriage was solemnized between us John Lidford and Harriet Sophia Harvey In the Presence of Luis Bonifia, Jane Gullliver

There were records for Harriet LIDFORD in the 1851 census – and further information about the family of her husband, John.

      1851 Census Index
      Piddlehinton [Fo 388]
Harriet 38; born Spetisbury [therefore born c.1813]
John 43; born Spetisbury; agricultural labourer
Edwin J 16; born Charlton Marshall; agricultural labourer
      Richard 15; " " "
Thomas H 7; born Blandford St Mary
      George H 4; " " " "

This seems to confirm that Harriet [formerly HARVEY] was born in Spetisbury even though her baptism is not in the register.

The baptism of Edwin J was in the transcripts of the Spetisbury Baptism register 1813-1837:
Edwin John LIDFORD s/o John & Harriet Sophia 27 Nov 1834 [father dairyman]

      1851 Census Index
      Spetisbury [Fo 178]
      Richard 68; born Wooland; dairyman
      Ann 67; born Mappowder
      Sarah 31; born Wimborne
      Martha 28; born Wimborne

      1851 Census Index
      Winterbourne Abbas [Fo 573]
      Richard 34; born Spetisbury; farmer
      No family

It is likely that Richard and John LIDFORD were brothers and the sons of Richard & Ann. This might be verified by finding their baptisms.

Also in the Spetisbury transcripts were the burials of:
Benjamin LIDFORD [formerly dairyman] 28 April 1818 aged 90
Edith relict of the above 3 May 1823 aged 85

In such a small place and having the same occupation – dairyman – there must be a connection, but Benjamin and Edith are too early to be the grandparents of John and Richard. Possibly great grandparents.

Dairymen tended to move around from farm to farm within a fairly small area – it was the nature of the job.
