On 10 Mar 1875, Christian Olson Haug purchased the West half of the Southwest Quarter of Section 31 from Ole Christianson Haug and Berit Christianson Haug for $800. Peter M. Oleson was a witness

Olson was sometimes spelled "Oleson." Christian lived most of
his life in Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota. Gida said he
worked on many farms, but was not a farm owner. Most of his time in
Wisconsin was with Annie and his first family, and he may have logged
there. The local towns he lived in or near were New London, Spicer, and
Canby in Minnesota, and Moritz and Gary in South Dakota. Caroline,
Gida's mother, was born in Moritz, near Gary, South Dakota, and
perhaps Johnny Olson was also. Gida thinks most of the second family
children were born near Moritz or Gary. It was strange and
interesting to learn that Christian lived in the same Gary area with
both his first and second families. However, the eight children in
each family apparently had little or no contact with each other.
Christian spoke good English and wrote English well, too. He
probably received some education or schooling in Norway, but this is
unknown. He arrived in the USA in 1857, at the age of 21. Both
granddaughters, Agnes & Gida, said he played the fiddle well and was a
good storyteller with a sense of humor. He was Gida's favorite
grandfather and she spent much time with him. She described him as
well-mannered and easy-going. Agnes stated that the Mindrum side of
the family all thought a lot of Annie. Her full maiden name was Annie
Gurine Peterson. Gida added that Christian was more fond of Annie than
of Christina. They both had no knowledge of where Annie had died, or was buried, but
guessed Wisconsin. They had heard of "Uncle Jim" and "Aunt Julia", but
knew nothing more of the first family. As late as 1912 and 1913 Peter was
still corresponding with his oldest brother, Christian. Gida has two postcards
      from Peter to Christian.

Both Gida and Agnes said that Christian never visited his parents,
or brother, in S.E. Minnesota until after Annie's death in 1903.
They said he was ashamed to see his relatives because he left Annie and got a new wife (Christina). It is unknown, but questionable, if Christian and Christina were ever legally married. No record can be found of their reported marriage in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Gida states that they were married there in 1876, but Christina stated it was in the "fall of 1878," in a Government statement she sent in 1921, when writing for a Widow's Pension. There is no record of, or reference to, a divorce from Annie, his first wife. According to Gida, Christian and Christina's first child, Hans Olaf Olson, was born October 20, 1876, in Medford, Wisconsin.

Marriage took place in the office of Samuel Acken, a Justice of the Peace. The witnesses were Ann E. Aiken and Frances Aiken. On March 10, 1875, Christian Olson Haug paid $800 for 80 acres Sec. 31(WpiSWs) in Rushford Township, Fillmore Co., Minnesota from his parents (Ole Christianson and Berit Haug). Christian Olson Haug (and his wife, Anne Olson Haug) defaulted on their $800 mortgage for the 80 acres purchased on March 10, 1975 fromhis father, Ole Christianson Haug. On March 19, 1876 Christian still owed his father, Ole, $81.87 and Ole began legal foreclosure actions with the land to be put up for public auction on May 4, 1877 , at the courthouse in Preston. At the public auction foreclosure, Ole Christianson Haug bought back the 80 acres for $116.37 and his son Christian lost title to the land.
