Word has been received of the death at Yonkers, NY of Frederick S. Jerome, formerly a well known resident of this city. He was 72 years old and had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Jerome left this city 15 years ago and had since lived in Yonkers. He lived here 10 years, being employed as engineer by the Arnold print works in what was known as the blue dip. He came to this city from Stockport, NY where he lived for years, being at that time employed as an engineer by the New York Central railroad. Since going to Yonkers he had been employed as an engineer in Van Cortland and Jerome parks in New York and his last work was running a pumping station for the New York Central railroad. Mr. Jerome leaves four sons and a daughter, Ernest and Jerry of this city, Charles B. of Stockbridge, M.A. Jerome of Yonkers and Mrs. T.A. Crisfield of Irvington, NY. He also leaves two brothers, John Jerome of Brooklyn and Watson Jerome of Newburg, NY. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Fred S Jerome didn't die in Yonkers, he died in Poughkeepsie at the Hudson River State Hospital of organic heart disease. He had been a resident there (either the hospital or Poughkeepsie) for 2 years, 2 months, 24 days, according to the death certificate from Poughkeepsie, register #3914. Interestingly, his status is listed as "married" and not "widowed."
The North Adams Transcript had him living in Yonkers up to the time of his death, but his death certificate stated he died in Poughkeepsie. In addition the death certificate states that his residence in Poughkeepsie was the Hudson River State Hospital (for the Insane). He had been there for two years, two months and 24 days. It came as a shock to me when I put this together. He died of coronary heart disease, and if it were just a matter of that he would have been hospitalized elsewhere. I just didn't "see" this before. Being the son of a cross cousin marriage, I wonder if that had something to do with his problems. Could have been that if he were suffering from hardening of the arteries that he could have had behavioral problems and in those days these kinds of hospitalizations could occur for more reasons than they do today. I contacted the hospital today and their early records from that era have been destroyed. [1, 2, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14]
