Edward H. Pratt, 74, who was engaged in the retail shoe business in North Adams for nearly half a century and was a former city councilman, died early this morning at his home, 33 Willow street, after a four weeks' illness from complications. He was born in North Adams, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William W. Pratt, and spent his entire life here. As a young man he was imployed for a time in the Arnold Print Works. In 1880 he and the late William H. Martin organized the firm of William H. Martin & Company and opened a retail shoe store on the State street side of the Martin block in quarters which are now part of c. H. cutting & company's store. The partnership continued with success until Mr. Martin's death, upon which his heirs sold their interest to the late William Pratt, who continued in business with his brother. The name of the concern was changed to Pratt Bros. and the business was moved to Main street. In 1911, Edward H. Pratt purchased the interest of his brother and continued the business alone until he retired from business in 1927. The Pratt shoe store was one of the city's best known and reliable mercantile establishments, having always enjoued the reputation of handling quality goods at fair prices. In 1909 Mr. Pratt was elected to the city council for a term of three years as a republican and throughout his term gave conscientious and efficient service. He did not seek re-election. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal church and was identified with all branches of the Masonic fraternity in this city. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Pratt Grindy of Marblehead, a sister, Miss Louise J. Pratt of North Adams and three grandchildren. The funeral arrangements have not been completed [4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14]
