James H. Eggen, 43 years of age, died suddenly at his farm home located five miles east of Rushford on Sunday, November 18th. Mr. Eggen was born in Rushford on November 13, 1913, the only son of Conrad and Carrie Eggen. He attended the Rushford schools, graduating with the class of 1931. Following his graduation, he took up the study of portrait photography in La Crosse, later going into photo finishing. He worked in La Crosse as a photo finisher until 1939, when he returned to Rushford to open his own Crystal Studio, which he operated until his induction into the Armed Forces in October, 1943. He served with the 23rd Corps Artillery in Northern France and Germany. In 1946 he took his discharge in Germany and accepted a position as supervisor of the American Air Photo Base at Erdwig, Germany. He remained there until 1950 when with his bride, the former Betty Dandl of Erdwig, he returned home and purchased a farm five miles east of Rushford which he operated until the time of his death.

James H. and Elisabeth D. Eggen, age 36 and 22, arrived 10 Oct 1950 at New York, NY on ship Henry Gibbins, port of departure Bremerhaven, Germany

The farm was bought after James and Mom (Betty) returned from Germany.  The plan had been for James to reopen his photo studio but upon returning found his equipment had suffered water damage being in the basement (I'm guessing in his parent's home).  At that point they decided to purchase the farm to raise dairy cows.

James Eggen, nickname "Hazzard", motto To work-- unnecessary if one can bluff.
