Notes |
- Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon of this week at 3:00 P. M, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rushford, with the Rev. Edward Sheppard officiating. Members of the Masonic Lodge attended the services in a body and conducted committal services at the grave. The pallbearers were R. J. McMahon, Clarence Niggle, Oscar Brekke, Leo Nowlan, Nels Danielson and Dr. John Moor. Burial was made in the Oak Grove cemetery. Conrad A. Eggen was born at Rushford on March 1, 1878, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Eggen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, by Rev. A. J. Wright. With the exception of a few years, when the family moved to Moorhead, he had lived his entire life in Rushford. As a young boy he served as a butchers apprentice to the late Olaus Tagland, and worked at that trade for several years in Rushford and Spring Grove, until he joined his father and uncle in the firm known as Eggen Bros. Later, with his brothers, Dan and Edgar, the firm, known as John Eggen and Sons, continued to serve the Rushford community as a Ford Dealership and farm machinery business until 1948, when it was sold. Mr. Eggen had spent the winters with his daughter and son-in-law since the death of his wife, and had resided with them continuously for the past year. Although he had suffered a heart condition for the past nine years and been in failing health for the past several months, he was eagerly looking forward to meeting his old friends at the Rushford Homecoming last weekend and had grown a long white beard for the occasion. However, it was not to be, and he slept away quietly the evening preceding their departure for Rushford. Mr. Eggen was always active in the business and social life of the Rushford community. He served two terms as Mayor, and several years as city councilman and member of the school board. He was on the Vestry of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for many years and served as its Senior Warden over 25 years. An ardent lover of vocal music, he sang in choirs and quartets, and as a soloist almost until his death. He frequently spoke of having started as a choirboy at the age of nine, and had sung almost continuously for over seventy years in the Episcopal, Lutheran and, Presbyterian churches in Rushford. He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Rushford, having served as its Worshipful Master, and was a member and Past patron of the Eastern Star Lodge. He was also a member of the Winona Scottish Rite Consistory. Mr. Eggen married the former Carolyn James on October 1, 1908. She preceded him in death on September 28, 1951. They were the parents of two children, James H., who died November 18, 1956, and Dorothy (Mrs. Norman Mindrum) of Downers Grove, Illinois, who survives, with four grandsons. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Florence Colbenson of Rushford, and two brothers, Dan of Rushford, and Alfred of Rosemeade, Calif.
