The following article, taken from the Oelwein, Iowa, newspaper, concerns the death of Mr. Peter A. Mindrum, a former resident of this vicinity. Peter Melvin Mindrum was born on a farm near Rushford, Minn., on April 7, 1889, and died at the age of 51 years at the Mercy Hospital in Oelwein on May 24, 1940 from injuries caused by a fall from the roof of a barn on which he was working. He graduated from the Rushford High School, the Minnesota State College and attended the University of Minnesota where he sang in the University quartet, played football and studied to become a civil engineer. He became ill and left his studies at the university and secured a position in a lumberyard. He was married on Feb. 16, 1916, to Hilda Hallum of Whalan, Minn., and in the course of the years he became the father of two boys and four girls. He was passionately fond of music and directed the choir of the Lutheran church in Austin, Minnesota, while he lived there. He also directed other choirs and several bands. He was widely known as a tenor and a cornet soloist though when he played in a band he preferred to play the drums. He became manager of a lumberyard and was very happy with his work, his family and his music until in 1932 when circumstances forced him out of business and he suffered a nervous breakdown. He brought his family to Oelwein in 1933 but here too the depression blocked the position of which he had been assured. In spite of his failing health he has kept his family together and given them a home. We could give him no higher praise than to say he succeeded in his effort. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon, May 26, and interment was made in the Woodlawn cemetery at Oelwein.—Oelwein Daily Register, Iowa. Mr. Mindrum is well remembered here in Rushford, for in addition to graduating from the local high school, he was employed in the local lumberyard for several years, working under the late Mr. O. E. Reishus. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, Sylvia, Gloria, Violet and Joyce and two sons Gordon and Vilas, all at home. Also surviving are his mother Mrs. Juliana Mindrum of Highland Prairie, six brothers and four sisters. They are: Oscar of Lanesboro, Elmer and Conrad of Madison, WI, Orney and James of Highland Prairie, and Arnold, north of Rushford, Mrs. Henry Meyer and Mrs. Henry Olson of near Cooperstown, ND, Mrs Harley Larson of Hesper, IA, and Mrs. Glen Shattuck of Highland. A large number of relatives and friends from this section drove to Oelwein to attend the funeral services there. [2, 5, 6, 7]
