AE:62, cause of death: stroke
The youngest child of Peter and Oline (Olson) Mindrum, Otto was born and raised on the family homestead. He attended the Sandsness school through 8th grade and was confirmed at the Highland Prairie Church, August 12, 1902.
Life on the Mindrum farm was severe and unrewarding in terms of monetary return. Nevertheless, the family led a reasonably happy life. Each day began before daybreak and ended long after sundown. The 200 acre farm had only 70 to 80 acres that were tillable. The soil was "fayette" a thin forested, highly erodable loam much less fertile and productive than the rich black sandy loam of nearby prairie land. These few acres, however, supported the large Mindrum family. Through the years it was operated as a grain, livestock and poultry farm. Supplemented by a large garden, virtually all the food was produced on the farm. Coarse work clothes were made from homespun wool. A large woodlot provided fuel for the cookstove and heat to combat long bitterly cold winters. Running water, indoor toilets, and electricity were nonexistent on this farm until the early 1940's. Farm equipment was first drawn by oxen and later by horses. Tractors weren't used on this farm until the early 1940's.
Born Otto Christian Olson
Otto married Olga Eleanora Overland (12/3/1890 - 4/16/1935) on June 30, 1915 at the Highland Prairie Church. Attendants were Melvin Mindrum and Lette Overland. The wedding was a major social event. A large tent was erected on the Overland farm lawn where music and various festivities were enjoyed. As close neighbors, Otto and Olga virtually grew up together. Both enjoyed the social life of the community. Most of the community activities revolved around the church and the villages of Rushford, Lanesboro, and Peterson. Trips to Winona, La Crosse, and Decorah were infrequent but considered to be major because this meant traveling 30 to 40 miles by horse drawn carriage. Otto and Olga were musically inclined. Otto played clarinet and violin. Olga played clarinet, piano, and organ. She was the church organist for several years. They were in the church concert band and together helped organize the first church orchestra. They also enjoyed singing in the church choir. Their music groups traveled to nearby communities and often won prizes for their performances. They purchased the home Mindrum farm in 1915 for $10,000. The farmstead was a gardenspot with a large sweeping lawn, stately evergreen trees, beautiful flowers, a large orchard and vegetable garden.
They raised three children.
They were a fun loving couple enjoying life to the utmost in spite of a depression and cancer which took Olga's life. Otto eventually sold the family farm, moving to Winona, and married Esther Overland who had lost her husband, James, some years earlier. They had a son. Following Otto's death, Esther moved to Ogden, Utah, where she married John Dance.
At the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock Rev. N.S. Magelssen united in marriage Olga Overland and Otto Mindrum. Lettie Overland was maid of honor and Melvin Mindrum attended the groom. Borghild Magelssen, Ella Mindrum and Tena and Lydia Overland acted as bride's maids. Prof. Pachman of La Crosse played the wedding march. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steiner Overland, highly respected citizens of Highland Prairie. The groom is an industrious young farmer, the son of P. M. Olson, one of Fillmore county's prominent old settlers. The newlyweds will make their home on the P. M. Olson farm on Highland Prairie. The Star wishes them a blissful and happy married life.
Emily Gilbertson worked as a "nanny" for the Otto Mindrum family. Her family, Gilbert E. Gilbertson, wife Johana, Emily, Ella, Randolph, lived next door to Otto and Olga in 1920 Census. [3, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20]
