Anderson Family

Robert Anderson was born 5 Jun 1804 in Virginia. He married Rebecca Wilson on 12 Oct 1824 in Sangamon County, Illinois. He second married Clarissa Wood on 15 June 1831 in Sangamon County. A Robert Anderson who matches known information about this person is listed in the 1830 US Census in Edgar County, Illinois and in the 1840 US Census in Wisconsin Territory, Iowa, Eastern Division.

In the 1850 US Census, Robert is found in Fayette, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, a farmer, age 46, born in Virginia, with wife Clarissa, and children Jane, Margaret, William, Albert, Mary, John, James, Jesse and Robert. He was living next to Jesse Wilson, age 64, born in Virginia, and his wife, Rebecca. These people are possibly the parents of Robert's first wife, Rebecca Wilson. Jesse Wilson is possibly the namesake of Jesse Wilson Anderson.

Robert Anderson died on 7 Jun 1857 in Fayette, WI. His gravestone reads:
"Mourn not for me when I am gone,
Weep not for me when I am gone,
Think of me at the hour of praise,
When I am gone."

Although some have traced Robert to parents James Anderson, b. 1784 in Botetourt County, Virginia, and Agnes Nancy Fletcher, b. 1786 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, and to grandfather Robert Anderson, b. 1739 in Donegal County, Ireland, I have seen no evidence to support this. Family lore says that Robert was of Scottish descent.

Jesse Wilson Anderson was born to Robert and Clarissa in Wiota, Lafayette Co., WI on 21 Oct 1847. He enlisted into the 50th regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers, on 20 Feb 1865 at age 17. His Civil War diary survives to this day. Jesse and his wife, Anna Cyria McConnell, farmed in Darlington, Wisconsin, then moved to Nebraska where they farmed in Syracuse. They lived in Kit Carson, Colorado in 1910 while their son, William, homesteaded there. Jesse died in Nebraska on 17 May 1921 and was buried in the Anderson plot, Syracuse, NE.

Jesse and Anna Anderson had ten children: Bessie E. born 25 May 1869, married Rev. John Embree. Louis R. born 20 Jan 1871, married Maggie Naylor. Lillian Belle born Nov 1872, married Ralph Van Horn. John Daniel born 21 April 1874, married Ora Bell Finnigan. Clarissa Jane "Clara" born 4 Jan 1876, married Robb King. Gertrude Evaline born 27 Sep 1877, married Charles Melick. Florence M. born 9 Jul 1879, died 2 Mar 1894. Marie Alice born 5 Apr 1881,

married Herman Coddington. Myrtle Lucille born 21 Feb 1884, married Charles Stewart. William Whitfield born 5 Oct 1887, married Lena Grouse.

William Whitfield Anderson was born in Syracuse, NE, the youngest of Jesse and Anna Anderson's children. He was quite a baseball pitcher and played AAA baseball. He homesteaded in Kit Carson, CO, graduated from school in accounting, and was also an excellent carpenter. After marriage and two children, he moved to Casper, Wyoming, and ran a grocery store. From there to Winnett, Montana to manage another store; then to Littleton, Colorado where he developed a poultry ranch. After another spin at cattle ranching in Kit Carson, Colorado, he worked as a contractor in Walden, Colorado supplying cedar posts to the highway department. Later he went to Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska where he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers building Air Bases during WW II. He then went to work in Los Angeles as an accountant where he retired. He moved to Cloudcroft, NM in 1956 where he lived until he died on 13 May 1973 at the age of 85. He is buried in Monte Vista Cemetery in Alamogordo, NM.
